If you’ve been listening to your hypnobirthing tracks at night and finding that you fall asleep before you get halfway through, you’re not alone! Many expectant mums worry that if they’re not consciously hearing the words, they’re not benefiting from the practise. But here’s the good news: falling asleep to your tracks is actually a sign that it’s working beautifully!
The Power of the Subconscious Mind
Your hypnobirthing journey is all about reprogramming your subconscious mind—the part of your brain that holds deeply rooted beliefs and automatic responses. The best time to access and reshape these beliefs is in that dreamy, in-between state between wakefulness and sleep. This is when your conscious mind starts to quieten, making your subconscious much more receptive to positive messages. So, even if you don’t remember what was said, your mind is still absorbing it.
Training vs. Birthing Time
Think of your hypnobirthing practise as “training” time. Each time you listen, whether awake or asleep, you’re reinforcing relaxation, confidence, and positive associations with birth. When your birthing time arrives, you won’t need to actively think about what you learned—your subconscious will simply activate what it has already absorbed, allowing you to remain calm, in control, and excited about your birth.
How to Make the Most of Your Tracks
Falling asleep while listening is completely fine, but if you’d like to vary your practise, try:
Listening at different times of the day when you’re more alert, like during a bath or while resting in a cosy chair.
Practising in different environments, such as in the car (as a passenger) or on a birth ball, to help your body associate relaxation with different settings.
Trusting the process! The more you listen, the more your subconscious is being gently rewired, shifting any fear of birth into confidence and excitement.
So, if you’re drifting off to sleep while listening to your tracks, celebrate it! Your subconscious mind is doing exactly what it needs to do. Keep going, and trust that your body and mind are preparing beautifully for a calm, empowered birth.
